FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept medical insurance?

Healing Family Functional Medicine does not accept any form of medical insurance or Medicare/Medicaid. However, we will provide you with an itemized superbill with ICD-10 diagnostic codes and CPT codes at the end of your consultation. You can file this with your insurance company and receive partial reimbursement depending on your plan/deductible. We do not assist with insurance reimbursement except for the superbill. You can use your flexible spending accounts (FSA) and health savings accounts (HSA) for all services. Generally, we will try to use your insurance plan for labs and prescriptions. If you are not certain, your insurance company will cover labs, please call them and ask what will be covered. We will also provide a letter of medical necessity for any supplements recommended to send to your insurance company or to your flexible spending account.

Do you accept Care Credit?

Unfortunately, we do not accept Care Credit, as they require practices to follow legal requirements related to routine health maintenance. Health maintenance includes services such as vaccinations, mammograms, age-related bone density scans, etc. These services are provided by your Primary Care Physician and do not fall under the scope of Functional Medicine.

Medicare Opt-Out

Healing Family Functional Medicine has opted out of Medicare, therefore, all services rendered to Medicare patients, must be paid by the patient and CANNOT be submitted to Medicare for reimbursement.

Can you be my primary care physician?

Unfortunately, we do not act as primary care providers. Please continue to maintain your established relationship with your primary care providers. There are no emergency hours or on call hours for our staff. All acute issues should be discussed with your primary.

Do you see patients virtually or in person?

Due to malpractice insurance, all out of state patients will need to be seen in person. We will be starting in person care in January 2023 on Wednesday at Glow Wellness in Pepper Pike, OH. Ohio residents can be seen virtually from anywhere in the state all the time. If you wish to be seen in person, this will be at Glow Wellness on Wednesdays.

Supplements

We recommend buying supplements from our online store at Full-scripts. There is a 10% discount for everyone who uses this store. You do not need to be a patient of the practice to use this website. Our desire is to provide you and your support team a convenient online way to buy good quality nutraceuticals.

Functional Medicine “kits” or advanced testing

Functional medicine offers a wide array of testing that can provide further information about your imbalances. Generally, these test are not covered by insurance. Payment for these kits are the patient’s responsibility and must be sent when you mail the kit to the testing laboratory. Our physicians regularly attend conferences and if specific advanced testing is discounted, we are happy to provide that discount to you but payment is expected at the time of the conference. We will communicate any future events via email to you.

What types of Functional Medicine Kits do you offer?

There are a variety of advanced testing kits. We can customize this at your visit in both groups and/or individually. In groups we try to use laboratory testing that is comprehensive and covered by insurance. We usually recommend one advanced testing kit if affordable. The most common test we utilize are below but there are many other test available that we utilize. Generally, we have found doing 1-2 test yearly works for many patients to maintain their health and/or to evaluate their detoxification goals.

-Stool testing evaluates your need for digestive support, prebiotics, gut microbiome diversity and abundance, overgrowth of bacteria or fungi present in the large intestine.

-Breath test-evaluation for bloating and worsening illness. It measures the types and amount of gases in the gut to confirm if there is a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). This test is often available at large institutions and we can provide a prescription to see if it is covered by insurance (please always call your insurance company to verify) The patient is responsible in scheduling the test as well as providing the results to our facility.

-Organic Acid Testing (OATs) - urine test that evaluates metabolites of fungal and bacterial overgrowth in the gut, mitochondrial function, neurotransmitters and vitamin/mineral/amino acid deficiencies. This is a great way of evaluating children who may not always cooperate with labs and “poop” collections! Other option is the Nutri-eval which is a blood and urine test.

-Food intolerances - commonly used in children to understand if there are food sensitivities that can be causing symptoms.

-Hormone testing - DUTCH urine test which is a comprehensive evaluation of all sex hormones and their break down products as well as the stress response and key vitamin levels affecting hormone balance.

-Adrenal testing - evaluating the adrenal hormone output over the day for possible adrenal dysfunction (commonly known as adrenal fatigue).

-Heavy Metal testing-urine test evaluating for total heavy metal burden

-Mycotoxin testing - urine test evaluating for mycotoxin (molds that can affect human health) presence.

-Environmental Toxin testing -urine test evaluating for a multitude of environmental toxins known to disrupt human health.
